Walking in Memory, Supporting Survivors *

Our Mission

The "Wear a Flan 4 Shan" walk is more than just a community event—it's a powerful tribute to Shannen, a beloved veteran who tragically lost her life to suicide. By coming together, we not only honor Shannen's legacy but also raise awareness and crucial funds for veteran survivors of suicide. Every step we take is a stride toward healing, connection, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.

Why Flannel?

The event's name, "Wear a Flan 4 Shan," is inspired by Shannen’s favorite flannel shirt and her beloved dog, Flannel, who she left behind. Flannel represents warmth, comfort, and loyalty—the same qualities we aim to provide to veterans and their families through the work of The Flannel Project.

What your support means

Through "Wear a Flan 4 Shan," we aim to raise $100,000 to support 100 veteran survivors of suicide with our SOS Flannel Card. Each card provides vital services like grief counseling, telehealth visits, chemist vouchers, and practical assistance such as meal and laundry services—support designed to help veterans' families during their most vulnerable moments.

Your participation, whether in person or virtually, will help us continue to offer this essential lifeline.

How to get involved

Walk with Us: Slip into your favorite flannel, gather your friends and family (dogs welcome!), and join us for either the 3km or 5km stroll.

Virtual Participation: Can't make it in person? Join our virtual walk! You can still be part of the cause by walking in your own community, wherever you are.

Volunteer With Us:

Want to make a difference beyond walking or donating? We welcome passionate volunteers to help make this event a success! Whether you’re interested in event setup, guiding walkers, manning registration tables, or simply offering your support along the route, your contribution will be invaluable in helping us run the event smoothly and creating a warm, welcoming experience for everyone involved.

As a volunteer, you’ll be part of a community dedicated to mental health awareness and veteran support. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to help and a desire to make a difference.

How to Volunteer:

  • Contact us at el@theflannelproject.com to sign up as a volunteer.

  • We’ll provide all the details and ensure you’re equipped to support our cause on the day of the event.

Donate: Even if you can’t walk, you can make a direct impact by donating. Every contribution helps us provide more SOS Cards to veterans and their families.

Your participation and donations go directly toward providing practical resources for survivors of veteran suicide. By raising $100,000, we will be able to support 100 survivors with our SOS Card, giving them access to vital services and support at a time when they need it most.

Honoring Shannen’s Memory and All Those We've Lost to Mental Health Struggles

Community, Connection, and Healing: *

The walk is not just about raising funds; it's about creating a community where people feel seen, heard, and supported. Mental health challenges often leave people feeling isolated, but by walking together, we show that no one has to face these struggles alone. The simple act of wearing a flannel shirt and joining the walk symbolizes our collective commitment to fostering understanding, empathy, and hope.
